Leads and develop Principal Data Engineers to design, build, and support data pipelines. The role implements the strategic direction for Data Engineering, fostering a collaborative, agile, and high performance culture. Responsible for evaluating and adopting cloud tools and technologies, advancing application modernisation, micro-services, and world-class engineering practices. Establishes long-term supplier relationships, defines performance metrics, and drives improvements focused on business outcomes, cost efficiency, and customer value.

In this role, you will:

• Build and lead Data Engineering teams, driving high engagement, productivity, innovative thinking, and cross-functional collaboration while eliminating non-value-adding work.
• Lead, coach, and mentor Principal Data Engineers, providing leadership vision, continuous feedback, and professional development. Ensure clarity on career paths and develop talent through goal setting, performance reviews, and a world-class engineering culture.
• Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and reliable data pipelines, warehouses, lakes, and analytics solutions, defining and monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and empowering engineers on quality standards, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
• Evaluate, select, and adopt fit-for-purpose tools and technologies to streamline data operations, executing technology assessments defining technology blueprints, and guiding proof-of-concepts to demonstrate business value.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across Business, Architecture, Data Insights, Data Scientists, Data Governance, and Enterprise Data Analytics (EDA) leadership to understand data needs and align engineering initiatives with strategic objectives.
• Identify and secure the right talent mix balancing existing staff, new hires, contractors, and strategic partners to meet current and future engineering demand. Lead long-term software engineering supplier relationships and support hiring, retention, training, and team development.
• Foster continuous learning and knowledge sharing across areas such as Artificial Intelligence enabled solutions, data warehousing, cloud enablement, machine learning, micro-services, performance engineering, secure coding, real-time analytics, DevOps (development & operations), and Data Governance, while enabling safe innovation and experimentation.

To be considered for this role, you must meet the below requirements:

• Qualification: Degree or Honours (12+3 or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field. Masters degree is preferable.
• Experience: 10+ years in Information Technology/Other.

Knowledge/Skills:

• 15+ years experience of building complex, scalable and large software solutions in data, digital or enterprise domain.
• 5+ years leading the design and development of data applications and pipelines, managing teams across domains such as Data & Analytics, Quality Assurance, Mobile Applications, Performance Engineering, Retail, Systems Integration, and Cloud Migration.
• 5+ years of experience in transformation and adoption of Agile methodology, with modern flexible working practices.
• 5+ years experience directly managing staff including work policy adherence, performance management and career development.
• 3+ years experience working with partner and/or offshore teams is preferred.
• Airline industry experience (preferred.
• Expert in data stacks, vendor products (Snowflake, Databricks, Cloudera, Microsoft Fabric), and cloud platforms (Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Oracle).
• Drives value and productivity by partnering with business and technical leaders.
• Manages vendors for complex solutions, global centres of excellence, and data transformations.
• Communicates complex data models and strategies clearly to all stakeholders.
• Data-driven problem solver ensuring accuracy, integrity, and reliable decision-making.
